Challenge:
Connect two underserved neighborhoods to a popular riverfront park system, and extend the public outreach and programming of the Kentucky Science Center
Solution:
Create a dynamic social destination that celebrates Louisville’s waterfront industrial roots by using authentic industrial artifacts as a catalyst for families and children to “Make Play Out of Work”. This 1.5 acre outdoor community space beautifully and imaginatively activates a challenging site located beneath an elevated highway that borders the bank of the Ohio River. Here, visitors will have access to play with and explore real-world heavy equipment. They can do work, like taking the controls of an excavator, in a series of fun, physical, and group-focused explorations.
Scope:
Strategic planning, benchmarking, community workshops, conceptual master planning, schematic design, and fundraising documentation in collaboration with MKSK Landscape Architecture and Creative Machines
