James Museum

The Jewel Box

Client: James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art
Location: Saint Petersburg, Florida

Challenge:

Celebrate the diversity of artists, styles, techniques, and materials found in an important contemporary Native American jewelry collection

Solution:

Introduce visitors to the incredible diversity of modern southwestern Native American jewelry design approaches and materials. The jewelry is grouped to highlight artist stories, styles, and influences past and present. The project also included a presentation of turquoise types produced in the six major mines in the American southwest, along with rough stones and the polished cabochons key to much of southwestern Native American jewelry.  A 3D digital model of each piece of jewelry was created to aid in the design of the gallery, custom mounts to best display each item, and the final layout of a gallery of unique shapes and lighting conditions inspired by southwestern buttes.
Scope:
Planning, exhibition design, mount design, space planning, infrastructure specification, collections organization, graphic design & production, fabrication & installation management
